Period Celebration Parties

2020 - ongoing

Period Celebration Party is an ongoing interdisciplinary project that merges personal exploration, social activism, and participatory art to challenge menstrual stigma and address period poverty. Rooted in self-portraiture initiated during the COVID-19 pandemic (see Period - Self-Portraits series), the project began as an intimate reflection on menstruation—using the artist’s own body and menstrual blood as material to reclaim a bodily experience often shrouded in silence, disgust, or shame.

This inquiry expanded with the creation of P.E.R.I.O.D., a feminist art music video that reimagines menstruation as a source of economic and cultural power. Conceived as a satirical utopia where menstruating bodies are revered, the video uses the medium of rap and the visual language of opulence to subvert societal taboos. It not only critiques the invisibility of period poverty, but offers an alternative narrative: one of pride, spectacle, and visibility.

Translating the energy and aesthetics of the video into lived experience, the artist initiated Period Celebration Parties — immersive, costume-based events that blur the boundaries between art, activism, and nightlife. Guests arrive dressed in gold and red—the dominant colors of the video—joining a collective ritual of dance, dialogue, and visibility. These gatherings transform menstruation from a source of shame into a cause for joy and solidarity, while simultaneously functioning as fundraisers for organizations supporting people experiencing period poverty.

Embracing visual culture’s power to amplify messages, the parties offer carefully designed photo spots featuring sculptural elements like “period money” and a two-meter golden vulva, inviting guests to document and share their participation. In doing so, they extend the project’s reach beyond the physical event, creating a ripple effect of awareness across digital platforms.

Each edition of the celebration carries its own context: from a sunset-lit boat on Berlin’s Spree River to a rooftop overlooking the TV Tower, a collaboration with London’s Vagina Museum, and an expansive installation for the Malta Festival in Poznań, one of Poland’s largest multimedia art events.

Period Celebration Party affirms the belief that art can make difficult conversations accessible—and memorable. By transforming discomfort into festivity, the project reclaims menstruation as something to be seen, shared, and honored.
