Midsummer Sisterhood

2020 - ongoing

Midsummer Sisterhood is an ongoing participatory photography project by Berlin Boudoir that reimagines the relationship between artist, subject, and audience. Since 2020, the project has unfolded through annual gatherings in nature — whether in forests, meadows, or by lakes near Berlin — where women of all ages, shapes, and backgrounds are invited to co-create a shared ritual exploring embodiment, female connection, and our place within the natural world.

More than a photographic series, Midsummer Sisterhood is a living, collaborative experience. Berlin Boudoir takes on the role of facilitator and director, creating a temporary space grounded in trust, openness, and mutual creation. With minimal production and an open-call structure, participants are not merely photographed — they shape the work alongside the artist, reclaiming agency over how their bodies are seen and experienced.

An essential component of the project is the collection of personal reflections from participants about their relationships with their bodies and the cultural narratives that have shaped them. These stories form a parallel narrative to the images, offering layered insight into how societal norms, shame, pleasure, and self-perception intersect in the lived experience of womanhood.

In this context, nature becomes a mirror, revealing our inherent belonging to it. The landscapes are not neutral backdrops but co-creators in the process, offering a space of grounding, freedom, and return. By placing the body in dialogue with its environment, Midsummer Sisterhood challenges the perceived divide between humans and nature, body and earth.

The audience is invited into this evolving conversation—asked not just to look, but to reflect: How do we see ourselves in our bodies? How do we understand our connection to nature? Through photography, testimony, and ritual, Midsummer Sisterhood offers an alternative model of beauty and femininity—one rooted in collectivity, care, and the recognition that we are, and have always been, part of the natural world.
